What it is

Mountains, crafts, peoples

The Ismayilli district lies in northern Azerbaijan, in the Mountainous Shirvan region, surrounded by the peaks of the Greater Caucasus. It is a land of dense forests, rivers and green slopes.

But Ismayilli is famous not only for its nature: ancient crafts survive here — the copper of Lahij and the silk of Basqal — along with a rare diversity of peoples.

Green Shirvan

Forest at the foot of the Caucasus

Oak, hornbeam, beech, alder and birch cover the slopes of Ismayilli. In these forests live deer, chamois, bears and boars, and the rivers feed the valleys with clear mountain water.
